AGNES N. "NINA" GAZDA, 80, of Las Vegas, NV, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2013 at St. Rose Hospital in Henderson, Nevada. Agnes was born in Krakow, Poland on January 21, 1933. She had been a longtime Northwest Indiana resident and was active in the Polish Women's Alliance. Nina, as she was affectionately known by her friends and family, was famous for her pierogi recipe. She and her daughter, Christine Eich, were the mother and daughter team who supplied their name and recipes to Nina's Fresh Pierogis in Merrillville which still provides enjoyment today with their renowned pierogis.
Nina is survived by 2 sons, Wally (Cathy) Gazda and Ted (Edna) Gazda, all of Las Vegas, NV, grandson, Adam Eich, son-in-law, Daniel Eich, sister-in-law, Helen Gazda, 2 nieces, Barbara Doepping and Linda Czarny. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Gazda, and 2 daughters, Christine Eich and Alicia Gazda.
Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2013 directly at Salvatorian Shrine
5755 Pennsylvania St., Merrillville, IN 46410, at 11:00 am with Rev. Lukasz Kleczka officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will follow immediately after mass at Calvary Cemetery in Portage. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Friends and family may gather from 10:00 until 11am at the Salvatorian Shrine.
