Alex Progre, age 96, of Hobart, Indiana, formerly of Gary and Jamestown, New York, passed , away on September 23, 2018.
He was born in Jamestown, New York on February 19, 1922 to Thomaia and Rafael Prokopia Progre.
Alex graduated from Jamestown High School and was a veteran of World War II. He served as an engineer for construction of the Burma Road in the Eastern theater. He retired from Gary Works, United States Steel, after 40 years of service as a supervisor in the Department of Production and Planning.
As teenager he showed interest in physical fitness, weight lifting and body building. Later he added running and bicycling to his routine exercise program. He continued vigorous exercising throughout his lifetime.
Alex was an excellent mechanic. He enjoyed working on old cars and restoring them. He also enjoyed sports, especially football, and was a fan of the Chicago Bears.
In retirement he mastered the art of gourmet cooking. He often served his family and friends delicious meals, including baked goods. Everyone loved his super pizza, always creative and made from scratch.
Alex maintained a low key personality and was always a gentleman. He will be greatly missed for his love, support, intelligence and wise advice.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers George, Robert, and Louis; and sister Nancy.
Alex is survived by sisters Dorothy Progre, Hobart and Patricia Mapp (James), Madison, Wisconsin; niece Juliette Mapp (Dan Kaufman), Brooklyn, NY; nephew Timothy Mapp (Sarah Lariviere), San Francisco, CA; great niece, Adele Daisy Mapp, Paris, France; great nephew Luca Kaufman, Brooklyn; and great nephew Laszlo Louie Mapp, San Francisco, CA..
The family extends grateful thanks for the caring services provided to Alex by the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Hospice of Valparaiso, especially Jean and Rachel; and for the strong, consistent support of friends, B.J. and Karen Johnson and C.N.A, Ashley Ramos-Garcia. Contributions in memory of Alex may be made to the VNA, 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, IN, 49383.
Private services presided by Chaplain Craig A. Forwalter were held on September 26, 2018. Arrangements were entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel.
