Portage, Indiana

Alfred Earl Krabbenhoeft, age 95, a longtime resident of Portage, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. He was born on June 22, 1916, in Gary, Indiana the son of Alfred and Edna Krabbenhoeft. Al was a graduate of Horace Mann High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps. Al married Ioma Jean Kenyon in Wichita Falls, Texas, on September 11, 1943. Al worked at United States Steel and retired after 40 years of service. He later enjoyed working as a delivery driver for Star Uniform. Al was very active with the American Legion Post 260 in Portage and was their oldest living Past Commander. He helped with the Boy Scouts and was a Cub Scout Master for Post 32. He also umpired for Portage Little League and loved fishing and ceramics.

Al is survived by his loving family; son Al (Holly) Krabbenhoeft, II, Portage, sister Rita Schallon, Chesterton, grandchildren Aaron Krabbenhoeft, Kristopher (Candy) Krabbenhoeft, Larry (Donna) Vaughan, Mike (Barb) Vaughan, Brian (Carla) Vaughan, all of Portage, Greg Weaver, of Bartonville, Illinois, 11 great-grandchildren, special friend Pat Starbuck, Portage, and other loving family. Al was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean Krabbenhoeft, daughter Sharron Vaughan, brothers Norman Krabbenhoeft and Robert Krabbenhoeft, and special friend Louise Kroner.

A visitation for Al Krabbenhoeft will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Rees Funeral Home – Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, with an American Legion Post 260 service at 7:00 pm. A funeral service for Al Krabbenhoeft will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, March 12, 2012 at Rees Funeral Home. Burial will be at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary.
