Obituary

Allen R. “Al” Wolak, age 73, of Hobart, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026. He was born on December 29, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Barney and Marietta Wolak.

As one of his first jobs, Al worked as a guard for Republic Steel in the late seventies. Al was deeply dedicated to serving his community, working in various capacities for Lake County government throughout his life. He spent 45 years as a private investigator and also served as a rescue diver with Lake County Aquatics. In addition, he worked as a bail bondsman and bounty hunter, as well as in child protective services, always committed to helping and protecting others.

Beyond his professional life, Al was a talented drummer with a lifelong passion for music. He performed with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Pipes and Drums, the Orak Shrine Pipes and Drums and he played in several rock and roll bands, most recently with the 47th St. Band. He was also a proud member of the Michigan City Orak Shrine.

Al is survived by his loving wife, Adora Wolak; his son, Adam Wolak; his sister, Diane (Kim) Tonry; and many cherished cousins and extended family members.
