Alvin Henry Meyer, age 83, of Portage, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016. He was born on May 11, 1932 in Gary, Indiana to the late Alvin and Ruby Meyer. Al retired after 21 years of working as a steelworker for National Steel Midwest Division. He was also employed at the Wheeler CO-OP for 15 years. He was an avid sports fan and liked watching the Chicago Cubs and the Bulls. He is described as a simple man who enjoyed bowling, farming and gardening in his free time. Above all, he was a family man and cherished the time he spent with his great grandkids. He will be sorely missed.
Al is survived by his son, James B. (Traci) Warren of Wheatfield; daughter, Donna (Daniel) Pickart of Ogden Dunes; grandchildren, John (Adriane) Warren, Rachel (Brian) Lindemuth, Jeremiah (Melissa) Warren, Danielle (Justin) Shilling, Michael (Stefanie) Pickart, Matthew Pickart; great grandchildren, Tonya, Charles, Anthony, Jeremiah, Jamie, Lilly, Eli, Emma, and one on the way. Also surviving are his brothers, Donald Meyer, Edward (Deanna) Meyer, Warren Meyer, and Eugene (Diana) Meyer.
Al is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Ruby Meyer, and his beloved wife, Wilma Jean Meyer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Al's name are preferred to the VNA Hospice Foundation, 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, Indiana 46383.
A funeral service for Al will take place Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 12:00 noon at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage with visitation there from 11:00 am until the time of service. The Reverend David McGrath will officiate. He will be laid to rest at McCool Cemetery in Portage. Visitation will be held Friday, April 1, 2016 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
