Amy L. Smith, age 56, of La Porte, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, August 6, 2026. Amy was born on August 11, 1969, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Ruth (nee Yocum) Ragsdale and Bill Akers.
Amy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose greatest joy in life was her family. She shared 46 wonderful years with the love of her life, Steven M. Smith, including 37 years of marriage after they were united in marriage on March 18, 1989, in Portage, Indiana. Amy was kind, caring, and generous, always putting the needs of others before her own. She had a heart full of compassion and an unwavering love for those closest to her. Her grandchildren were truly her greatest treasure, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Steven M. Smith; her son, Chad (Taylor Blank) Smith; her daughters, Teresa (Bryant) Gurley and Stephanie (Zach) Clevenger; her sisters, Cynthia Stanford and Crystal Schilling; her nine cherished grandchildren, Brielle, Taytumm, Audrey, Draven, Zayden, Ryker, Sawyer, Kinslee, and Mya; and her brother-in-law, Edward Smith. Amy was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Ragsdale, her father, Bill Akers and sister, Kimberly Gagliardi.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, August 13,2026 at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave. Portage, Indiana 46368, with Pastor Scott Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will also be held Thursday, August 13,2026 from 10:00 am until the time of the service at the funeral home.
