Andrew P. Kopil, age 84, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso. Andrew was born on September 11, 1928 in Gary, the son of the late John and Veronica (nee Yanovich) Kopil. He was a Hobart resident since 1993, a former longtime Calumet Township resident and a former member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Gary. Andrew was a retired Supervisor for U.S. Steel and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Ryder 4047 Council, and American Legion Slovak Post #367. Andrew enjoyed bowling, golfing and fishing. His family will remember him as "Simply the Best" dad, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Andrew is survived by his loving family; son: Jeffrey (Teresa) Kopil of Gary, daughter: Andrea (Richard) Sopko of Hobart; 6 grandchildren: Hillary (Joel) Weiss; Emily & Rachael Sopko, Sarah, Jeffrey & Adam Kopil; one great- granddaughter, Sofia Rose Weiss, two sisters: Betty (Tom) Higgins and Ann Marie "Pookie" (Bud) O'Conner; many loving, nieces and nephews and other loving family members and friends, his wonderful neighbors and "Fritz" his beloved schnauzer companion of the last eight years.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife; Sylvia (nee Sarkey) Kopil, his parents, brother, John (Teresa) Kopil and sisters: Helen Gudinas, Dorothy (Robert) Savitski and Mary Zagrovich.In lieu of flowers donations to Horton VNA Hospice, 2401 Valley Drive, Valparaiso, Indiana 46383-2520 would be appreciated.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 13, 2013, beginning with 9:15 a.m. prayers at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart and then proceeding to The Cathedral of Holy Angels, 640 Tyler Street, Gary, Indiana, 46402 for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Michael Kopil celebrating the Mass. Cremation will follow the service.
