Anne M. "Pookie" (Kopil) O'Connor, 83, of Chalmers, formerly of Gary and Lake Village, passed away peacefully at 11:08 PM, June 11, 2017 at home surrounded by family.
She was born July 4, 1933 in Gary, IN to the late John and Veronica (Janovich) Kopil. She attended Gary Froebel High School of Gary.
Her first marriage was to Myron Eugene Hanes on December 31, 1952. He preceded her in death. She later married Ralph "Bud" W. O'Connor on August 12, 1995. He preceded her in death on November 15, 2014.
Anne was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #367 of Gary and St. Joseph the Worker Church also of Gary.
Anne was a Nurses Aid and QMA in Roselawn for many years and also spent time as a librarian and real estate agent. She enjoyed spending her time watching sports on television, especially tennis, basketball, and Chicago Cubs baseball. Most of all Anne enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Jo Anne Doxey of Williamsburg, VA, Myron E. "Bud" Hanes of Portage, IN, Karen Flatt of Valparaiso, IN, Lisa (Richard) Olson of Coatesville, IN, Linda (Don) Doyle of Chalmers, IN, and David (Brenda) Hanes of Avon, IN; sister, Betty Higgins of Merrillville, IN. Also surviving are grandchildren, Edward (Natasha) Zdobylak, Jennifer (Troy) Smith, Ken (Mandy) Olson, Andy (Andrea) Olson, Jenna Olson, Amy Olson, Alyssa (Adam) Richart, and Megan Doyle; 6 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death with her parents and spouses are siblings, Mary Zagrovich, Helen Gudinas, Dorothy Savitski, Johnny Kopil, and Andrew Kopil; son-in-law, Jeff Flatt, and granddaughter, Nicole Anne Russell.
Friends may call from 4-8 PM (CST) Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Rees Funeral Home (600 W. Old Ridge Rd. Hobart, IN). Funeral Mass 10 AM (CST) Friday, June 16, 2017 at St. Andrew Church (801 W. 73rd Ave. Merrillville, IN 46410). Interment to follow in Calumet Park Cemetery of Merrillville, IN. Fr. Mick Kopil to officiate.
