Aurora Vela

Aurora Vela (nee Velasquez), age 90, of Portage passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021. She was born on April 7, 1931 in East Chicago, Indiana to the late Antonio and Aurora Velasquez. She was a dedicated member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hobart. She loved to cook and spend time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Steven (Nancy) Vela; two grandchildren, Stephen Vela, Jr., Joseph Vela; brothers, Tony (Nora) Velasquez, Charles (Rose) Velasquez, Mundo Velasquez, Mario (Debbie) Velasquez; sisters, Teri Jarecki, Helen (Bob) Wirtz, Margie Martin, Ophie Rice.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Vela in 2001; and one brother, Robert Velasquez.

A funeral service for Aurora will take place Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 12:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart. She will be laid to rest at Calumet Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the funeral home. For more information, please call (219) 942-2109.
