Age 65, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Barbie was born on June 25, 1948 to Spiro J. and Emily Johnson in Gary, Indiana. On November 20, 1971, Barbie married the love of her life, Joseph P. Cortese at Our Lady of Consolation in Merrillville. She had worked as a teacher at Highland High School and then tutored from her home. Barbie enjoyed reading, craft fairs, animals and being near water. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Barbie is survived by her husband of 42 yrs, Joseph P. Cortese of Crown Point; two sons, Joseph S. Cortese of Crown Point and Craig (Amanda) Cortese of Valparaiso; granddaughter, Caralyn Emily Cortese and father, Spiro Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her mother Emily B. (nee Keltyka) Johnson.
A Mass of Christian burial for Barbie will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, January 13, 2014, directly at Holy Spirit, Catholic Church, 7667 E. 109th Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307, with Rev. Thomas E. Mischler officiating. Burial will follow at Angelcrest Cemetery in Valparaiso. Visitation will be from 1-5 pm on Sunday, January 12, 2014 with a prayer service at 4 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Winfield Chapel, 10909 Randolph St., Winfield/Crown Point, IN 46307.
