Bernice M. Gasper, age 88, of Hobart, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. 

She was born on December 26, 1937, to the late Lyle and Bernice Gray and was raised in Miller, Indiana. She spent many years working for the United States Postal Service before later working at VFW Post 5365 in Hobart. 

She was deeply involved with the VFW Post 5365 Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed golfing, including being a member of the Indian Ridge Ladies Day League. Golf was one of her great passions, and she traveled often to play the game she loved. 

She was known for her strong personality, sharp wit, and unwavering independence. She lived life on her own terms and was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She loved time spent with friends, good conversation, a glass of wine or a Manhattan with extra cherries, and was never one to hold back what she thought. 

She was also generous in her own way and could often be found helping the Hobart Humane Society by supplying food, blankets, or whatever was needed at the time. 

She is survived by her son, Lyle (Sue) Hannigan, and daughter, Kathi (Mark) Hannigan, both of Hobart; her five grandchildren, Donna (Doug) Tipold, Therese Overturf, Crystal Mroz, Taylor Stevens, and Jordan (Antonio) Rongstad; and her great-grandchildren, Breanna (Felicia), Zacharie, Brennan, Kane, Piper, Finley, and Emery. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Gasper, and her beloved cat, Teeny. 

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 14, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with services beginning at 5:00 p.m., at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart. Services will conclude at the funeral home, with cremation to take place at a later time.
