Bernice E. Holland, age 94 a longtime Lake Station resident passed away Monday, October 2, 2017. She was born on February 8, 1923 in Gary, Indiana to the late Denis and Delia Holland. She graduated from Catholic Central High School in Hammond in 1941. She went on to earn her Bachelors's degree from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo Michigan. She then attended the University of Michigan where she earned her Master's degree in deaf education. Bernice taught the hearing impaired in Flint and Kalamazoo Michigan for thirty seven years. She was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Lake Station and the St. Francis Ladies Sodality. She also volunteered at St. Mary Medical Center.
She is survived by six nieces, Sharon (Darrel) Whitledge, Karen (John) Nauta, Patricia (Charles) Scanlon, Maureen Holland, Kathy (David) Aldrin, Beth (Don) Livingston, one nephew, Dennis (Robin) Holland, many great nieces, great-nephews, and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Leonard (Ellie) Holland, one sister Irene Holland.
Funeral services are Friday, October 6, 2017 beginning with 9:15 a.m. prayers at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart and proceeding to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Roque Meraz officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Portage. Visitation is Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary service at 3:00 p.m. and a Rosary at 3:30 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
