Bernice M. Sampson, age 80 of Hobart passed away, Tuesday, October 11, 2011. She was born on January 31, 1931 to the late Stanley and Louise Fisher. She was a Hobart resident for over 55 years and was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School. Bernice retired from U.S. Steel with over 30 years of service. She was a member of St Bridget Catholic Church, St. Anne's Confraternity, American Legion Post 54 Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 9323 and Post 5365 Ladies Auxiliary. She also served as the treasurer for the Hobart and Lake Station VFW's. She volunteered her time at St. Mary Medical Center as a Pink Lady. Bernice loved playing Bingo, playing cards, and she enjoyed going to the boats with her friends. She loved spending time with her family and friends and she loved her cats.
She is survived by 1 son, Kim (Carolyn) Bonner of Hobart, IN; 2 daughters, Cindy (Joe) Gromala of Wolcottville, IN; Kathe Brooks of Hobart, IN; 6 grandchildren, Heather, E.J., Dustin, Clint, Tamara, Bob, 3 great-grandchildren, Cole, Carter, and Madilyn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Sampson, 1 daughter, Beverly Benninghoff, 3 brothers, Stanley, Carl, and Mickey Fisher, 1 sister, Jeanne Allendorf, and 1 son-in-law, Herb Brooks.
Funeral services will be Friday, October 14, 2011 beginning with 9:30 a.m. prayers at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart and proceeding to St Bridget Church for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Visitation is Thursday, October 13, 2011 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
