Obituary

Betty Jane (nee Russ) Davis, born on December 30, 1937, was welcomed into heaven on Saturday, May 7, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.  Betty was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved her family and her Lord so very much.

Betty is survived by her husband of 67 years: James Davis of Portage, IN; 2 daughters: Cindy (Bob) Hansen of Chesterton, IN and Sherry Davis of Portage, IN; 3 grandchildren: Dr. Lauren Hansen of Indianapolis, IN, Lisa Reno of Chesterton, IN, and James (Hannah) Wring of Portage, IN; 8 great-grandchildren: Eleanor and Hiatt Hansen, Liam, Jackson, and Brody Reno, and Chase, Jennifer-Lynn, and Madilynn Wring;  2 sisters-in-law: Pat Burnett and Margie (David) Fields; brother-in-law: Danny (Jody) Davis; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents: Robert and Grace Russ; 2 brothers: Melvin Russ and Roger Elwood Russ; and cousin: Jane Franks.

Betty loved music, art, and musicals including movies, cantata, and choirs.  She enjoyed playing the piano and singing duets with her husband at church.  Betty taught her family her favorite showtunes around the dinner table and taught them how to play the piano and sing in harmony.  She looked forward to Mother's Day every year to plant the most beautiful flower gardens.  Her home was her castle, decorating it beautifully according to season, especially at her fondest holiday Christmas.  She doted on her husband, kids, and grandkids.  Betty was mostly known for her vibrant personality, infectious laughter, kindness, and desire to encourage and mentor young women into a fully committed relationship with Jesus.

For years she hosted and taught weekly in-home Bible studies around the dining room table and taught Sunday School for many years.  You could always count on a good cheese board and treats to go along with the studies!

Although she had numerous health struggles over the years, Betty kept going, kept praying, and always trusted that God had her best in mind.  Although her family is broken hearted, they are blessed to have had her for 84 years and know now that she is fully whole.

Betty's family would like to thank the VNA Hospice, especially Jean, Nancy, and Britteny, and Chaplain Ben Polhemus for their tender care for the past 6 months.  A special thank you to Sharyl Schmidt for helping to keep the house going.

Betty's family requests that plants and silk florals be sent in her honor.

Family and friends may gather at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel (5341 Central Ave, Portage) on Thursday, May 12, 2022 from 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M.  A funeral service will take place immediately following at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Duane Schmidt officiating.  At Rest, Calvary Cemetery.

Betty's final wishes were to finally wear red high heeled shoes in heaven and that whatever you do, lift up Jesus.  See you soon, Momma.
