Betty J. Kerns

BETTY J. KERNS, age 84, a longtime Portage resident, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2021.  She was born in her grandmother's home in Medaryville, IN on November 22, 1936 to the late Raymond and Lillie Kuehnle.  Betty was a faithful and active member of Portage United Methodist Church.  She was a huge advocate for M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) after losing her daughter in an accident, and went on to share her story with many at the alcohol and drug classes in Lake and Porter Counties.  She also was a part of an Illinois Bell Club for 60+ years with other work friends. Betty worked for Illinois Bell, sold Avon, worked in the Portage School System, and more recently worked as a receptionist at Dr. Kumar's office. She will be missed by those her knew and loved her.

She is survived by her children, Craig (Marie) Kerns and Tricia Kerns; granddaughter, Christina (Alan) Kerns; great grandson, Roman; dear cousin, Judy Jenks; special family friend, Deb Wenninger; many other dear friends and family.

Betty was also preceded in death by her husband, Delos Kerns and daughter, Pamela Kerns.

A visitation for Betty will be Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage, from 9:00 until the time of time of service at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.  Please call (219) 762-3013 for additional information. COVID MASKS ARE PREFERRED.
