Betty Marie Owen

Betty Marie (Carter) Owen, age 76, of Portage, passed away Monday, September 28, 2026. She was born on August 27, 1950, in Danville, Illinois, to the late Beatrice Barbara (nee Coplen) Carter and Harry E. Carter. Betty was a wonderful mother and grandmother who cherished spending time with her family. She especially loved doing things with her children and making memories with the people she loved most. Betty had a big personality and a presence that could fill any room. She was sassy, never afraid to speak her mind, and always ready with a joke or a good laugh. Her loud, joyful laughter and beautiful smile were unmistakable, and she certainly knew how to make herself heard. Betty brought energy, humor, and love to every family gathering. She had a few favorite things that brought a smile to her face, including her beloved Betty Boop and an ice-cold Pepsi. But above all, Betty’s greatest joy was her family. She treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and the memories they made together will be cherished forever.

Betty is survived by her two sons, Donald (Karen) Owen and Ronald (Katrina) Owen; daughter, Barbara (Ken) Hutchison; brothers, Jimmy and Richie; sister, Carol (Dan); seven grandchildren, Dustin, Dakota, Dallas, “Mini Ron,” Cheyenne, Kathryn, and Serenity; six great-grandchildren, Anthony, Serenity, Katalina, John, Jeriko and Violet; and many other loving family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Corby Burton; her parents; and siblings, Willy, Harry, Jo Jo, Margaret, Johnny, and Carol.

Betty will be remembered for her big heart, her sassy personality, her laughter, and the love she had for her family. She leaves behind many wonderful memories and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A funeral service for Betty will be held Monday, October 5, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave. Portage, Indiana 46368. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be held Monday, October 5, 2026, from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm also at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel.
