Billy "Red" J. Sanders, Sr., age 82, of Portage, passed away May 28, 2021 at home surrounded by his family.  He was born in Sullivan, Indiana on July 15, 1938 to the late Benjamin and Mary (nee Barnes) Sanders.  He retired from US Steel after 41 ½ years of service.  He was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Portage.  He loved to grill, wash and wax his vehicles, and adored spending time with his family.  He cherished playing Santa Clause every Christmas season for all the children.

Billy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lynda (nee Buchman) Sanders; son, Billy (Valerie) Sanders, Jr.; granddaughter, Michelle (Robert) Blankenship; great grandchildren, Katy, Seth, Brianna, Alyssa; great-great grandson, Wyatt; and beloved friend and caregiver, Tina LaRue.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Jo Grochowski; brother, Donald Sanders; and his parents.

A funeral service will take place Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at 12:00 pm at Bible Baptist Church, 6659 U.S. Hwy 6, Portage, IN 46368 with Pastor Don Good officiating.  He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery, Portage.  Visitation will be held prior to the church service from 10-12 pm.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel.  For more information, please call 219-762-3013.  Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.reesfuneralhomes.com .
