IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bonnie Pierrou
Mcafee
January 29, 1947 – April 23, 2025
Bonnie Pierrou McAfee, 78, passed away peacefully on April 23rd, 2025 surrounded by her family.
Bonnie was born as Bonnie Lynn Pierrou on January 29th, 1947 to Beulah Mae (Lewis) and Robert (a.k.a. Bob) Bergsten Pierrou in Cleveland, Ohio.
By her telling, when she was ready to enter the workforce women could be either a teacher, a secretary, or a nurse, and she chose nursing. She got her RN degree from the Presbyterian School of Nursing and over the course of a long career did everything from caring for premature babies to being a hospice nurse. In the late 80's this culminated with her obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana University Northwest.
Her first marriage to D. Eugene Yoder resulted in a son, Michael Eugene Yoder. They divorced in 1982. In 1985 she married David W. McAfee, and had a long and happy marriage.
David had a dream of starting an apple orchard, and in 1988 David and Bonnie began the process of planting trees on their land in Hobart, Indiana. As the trees grew, so did the business, until in the late '90s County Line Orchard was a thriving U-Pick apple orchard, featuring apples, entertainment, a petting zoo, and thousands of kids on school tours. David was the visionary and Bonnie was the organizing and bookkeeping force behind the scenes. In 2005 they won the North American Farmer's Direct Marketing Association's "Outstanding Farm Marketer of the Year" award. In 2006, realizing that the kids were not going to come back and run the business, they sold the orchard.
In 2000 her son Mike and daughter-in-law Beckie moved to California. In 2007 Bonnie held her baby granddaughter Ada in her hands and proclaimed "I have to move to California." They moved to Granite Bay, CA, where they resided for many years and were visited on many weekends by Mike, Beckie, and their daughters Ada and Zoe. During the pandemic (August of 2020) they got the chance to buy the house next door to Mike and Beckie in San Jose, CA. They lived there, surrounded by family, until the present.
Bonnie is survived by her husband David McAfee, son Michael Yoder, daughter-in law Rebecca Yoder, granddaughters Ada and Zoe Yoder, stepchildren David (Shannon) McAfee and children, Andrew McAfee, and Sarah (Jay) McAfee and children; brother Jim Pierrou (Rhonda), niece Angela (Charles) and children, Nephew Brian (Julie), Nephew Cody (Hannah) and children.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday May 10th from 12 to 3 in the barn at County Line Orchard. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please donate to charity or plant a tree.
