Carmen M. Gutierrez (nee Reyes), age 96, of Hobart passed away quietly in her sleep Thursday, January 18, 2024. She was born on September 20, 1927, in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico to the late Jose and Julia (nee Gutierrez) Reyes. Carmen was married to the love of her life, Eugenio Gutierrez, for 60 years. She lived with her husband in Merrillville for many years until her husband retired and they moved to Puerto Rico for 16 years. Carmen and her husband moved back to Merrillville to live even more loving years together. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Gary. Carmen completed her Cursillo movement and would often help out at St. Anthony Church in Gary. She was also a member of the Legion of Mary auxiliary and devoted to the Miraculous Medal.  She loved to give donations to the poor and always received many certificates. Carmen was a very kind and caring soul, who would help those in need. She cared deeply for her family and friends and would always be there for them. Her family was blessed to have her live a long life and she will be deeply missed by her loving family and friends. Carmen will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Norma Gutierrez and Luce (Felix) Roman; her grandchildren, Felix Jr. and Norma Evette (Jason); her great-grandchildren, Nya, Rosie, Yassi; her brother, Thomas Reyes; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and dear friends.

Carmen is preceded by her late husband Eugenio; her parents, Jose and Julia; and several brothers and sisters.

Visitation for Carmen will be held Friday, January 26, 2024, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at St. Joseph the Worker, 330 East 45th Avenue, Gary, Indiana 46409. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, January 26, 2024, at 12:00 pm at St. Joseph the Worker with Reverend Pat Gaza officiating.
