IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Curtis "Lumpy"
Remus
December 17, 1946 – November 1, 2025
Curtis "Lumpy" Remus, 78, of Hobart, Indiana, passed away on November 1, 2025, in Munster, Indiana. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, Curt left behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, and community spirit. Born on December 17, 1946, in Gary, Indiana, Curt was a proud graduate of River Forest High School's Class of 1965. His athletic talent earned him a full scholarship to Indiana State University where he played football. During his time on the team, he contributed to what remains the school's best record—a remarkable 9-1 season in 1968–69 that has yet to be surpassed. Curt carried his dedication and drive into every aspect of his life. As a member of Laborers Local 81, he wore many hats over the years—Recording Secretary, laborer, Foreman, General Foreman—and became well known for running "Lumpy's Lunch Wagon," where he served warm home-cooked meals to workers from across the country. His efforts brought comfort and camaraderie to job sites and reflected his deep care for those around him. In addition to his work with Local 81, Curt was co-owner and operator of Remus Farms. There he continued his tradition of giving back—donating straw bales and corn stalks for Halloween celebrations at local schools or providing beautiful Christmas trees for classroom decorations. Customers fondly recall the Spring Open House events where Curt would serve omelettes to the community and offer generous deals on merchandise. His kindness and hospitality made Remus Farms more than just a business—it was a gathering place built on goodwill. Curt was also an avid athlete throughout his life. Always ready for a pick-up game or batting practice with his kids, he found joy in staying active and sharing those moments with others.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Barbara C. (née Trezak); daughter, Lisa Marie; sons, Kurt Mathew and Marc Christopher; granddaughter Olivia Jane; sister-in-law, Barbara A. (Randy); nephews Jeff Burkhalter of Oregon and Todd Burkhalter of Nevada; as well as several great-nieces and nephews—all of whom carry forward memories of his warmth and strength.
Curt was preceded in death by his mother Dora (née Craven), father William, brothers Bill and Randy, and sister Catherine Sue. A man defined by integrity and generosity, Curtis "Lumpy" Remus will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him and inspiration to all who remember his unwavering spirit.
