David L. Baldauf, age 76, of Lake Station, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2026. Born May 16, 1950, in Gary, Indiana, David was a 1968 graduate of River Forest, where he wrestled, and went on to serve in the US Navy. He spent nearly 30 years as a “phone guy,” known for bouncing back well after a fall- whether from a tree or a telephone pole. An avid softball player, David competed in both fast and slow pitch, playing for the GTE team that consistently claimed state titles. He also competed in many bowling leagues and tournaments. David had a love for all music collecting media from reel to reel to digital. David was also an ordained minister who officiated eight weddings, beginning with his son Scott’s and ending with his granddaughter Alyssa’s. He was a loving husband, dad, papa, great-papa, brother, and friend, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine (nee Klutts); two children, Scott (DeAnn) Baldauf and Michelle (Bill) Carney; seven grandchildren, Brett (Christina), Alyssa (Eric), Zackary (Rey), Paige (Seth), MaKynzee (Austin), Addison and Molly; three great-grandchildren, Madelynn, Tanner, Forest and baby Kinleigh Grace due in November; brother, Joe Baldauf; sister, Kristine Merritt; many nieces, nephews, and other loving family and dear friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Charles “Chub” and Betty Baldauf; brothers, Jimmy and Paul; beloved dog, Chloe.
There will be a memorial service for David on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 2 p.m. with Chaplain Hector Trevino officiating. Memorial visitation will be Saturday just prior the service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart. (219) 942-2109.
