David Dawson Chnupa, age 75, Portage, Indiana passed away August 9, 2023. Born June 1, 1948 in Gary, Indiana.

David worked at Bethlehem Steel, Budd  Company, various sales positions, including heavy duty trucks and parts, and was plenty busy during the Christmas season. He was very well known for being Santa at malls across the country, bringing joy to all during, in, and out of the holiday season, which he found both humbling and heartwarming.

David and his wife, Valerie, are members of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was an avid reader, loved listening to music, playing racquetball, fishing, walking on the beach and enjoyed car racing as a member of the Sports Car Club of America. In 2015 was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award in Indianapolis for his participation on many committees and boards in Portage.

David is survived by his loving wife of 27 years Valerie and adoring daughter Karly, both of whom he cherished.

In addition to his parents, Karl Chnupa and Mildred Chnupa(Nordohl), David was preceded in death by his devoted son Paul; his brother, Karl Jr.; sister, Susan; and many other loving family members and friends.

David was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Rees Funeral Home Olsen Chapel is honored to care for Mr. Chnupa and his family.   According to his wishes, there will be no public service.

The family request memorials be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the family.
