David “Dave” Charles Mardis, age 66, of Portage, Indiana, passed away on April 15, 2026. Dave was born on June 13, 1959, in Gary, Indiana, to Richard Sr. and Martha Mardis. He spent much of his life in Northwest Indiana, where he built a reputation as a hardworking, loyal, and kind-hearted man. He was employed at Cleveland Cliffs since 1979, where he worked in the blast furnace. Dave took great pride in his work and the people he worked alongside. On May 10, 2024, Dave married Cynthia Carlotta-Mardis, beginning a new chapter filled with love and companionship. Dave was a member of American Legion Post 260 SAL, where he valued camaraderie and community. In his free time, he enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, and golfing—simple pleasures that brought him peace and happiness. Dave will be remembered for his big heart, his intelligence, and his genuine love for everyone he knew. He had a way of making people feel welcome and cared for, leaving a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Carlotta-Mardis; two daughters, Dawn (Timothy) Wenzel and Alysha (Justin) Anton; three step-sons, Ricardo (Victoria) Carlotta, Kyle (Megan) Carlotta, and Nico (Felicia) Almodovar; grandchildren, Trenton Wenzel, Elias Wenzel, Isaac Wenzel, Maeby Anton, Jensen Anton, Lucas Anton, Ciana Carlotta, Dean Carlotta, Sam Carlotta, Jaxon Carlotta, Vayda Almodovar, and Scottie Almodovar; two brothers, Richard (Ruth) Mardis and Ronald (Jen) Mardis; sister, Alice Valpatic; and many other loving family members and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Anna Booth, Susan George, and Aletria K. Mardis-Storkman.He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation for Dave will be held Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 2:00-8:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Brady Chapel 3781 Central Ave. Lake Station, Indiana 46405. Cremation will follow.
