Dorothy R. Elkins, age 90 a longtime Portage resident passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2019.  She was born on February 4, 1929 in Gary, Indiana.

She graduated from Tolleston High School.  Dorothy was a member of the American Legion Post 260 Ladies Auxiliary and the Portage Historical Society.  She loved baking and sewing.

Dorothy is survived by one daughter, Denise Grinder, five grandchildren, John E. Grinder IV, Joel (Heather) Grinder, Amanda (Brandon) Reeves, Bryan Elkins, James Elkins, six great-grandchildren, Tyler, Joel, Byran, Jacob, Zoey, and Andrew.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Gastel, mother and stepfather, Irene (Glenn) Cook, husband, Harry Elkins , one son, James Elkins, one son-in-law, James Grinder III, three sisters, Lorraine Galo, Bernice Gastel, Jerri Koch, and one brother, John Gastel.

Cremation will be handled by Rees Funeral Home and Cremations Service, Olson Chapel, Portage, (219) 762-3013.  Burial of cremains will be at Calvary Cemetery, Portage.
