Dorthula Hawkins, age 78, a longtime resident of Gary passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2010. She was born on February 11, 1932 in Cullman, Alabama the daughter of Burr and Emma Powell. Dorothy was married to Charles Hawkins in April of 2008 in Lake Station. Dorothy was a member of the Senior Citizen's group of Lake Station and the 29th Avenue Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Dorothy never met a stranger and was a friend to all.

Dorothy is survived by her loving family; husband Charles Hawkins, Gary, daughters Linda Bieker, FL, Ruby (Richard) Cleveland, Lake Station, Suzanne (John) Simko, Crown Point, Lisa Wright, Louisville, KY, and, Catherine (Mike) Glancy-Tucker, LaGrange, KY, sons Michael (Kristine) Doherty, Portage, and David Bieker, Louisville, KY, 33 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, step-daughters Cindy (Dave) Hanrath, Chesterton, and Gail Bieker, Gary, step-sons Charles (Kathy) Hawkins, LA, and Keith (Karen) Hawkins, Hammond, and step-daughter Deborah (Kevin) Hall, Portage, brothers Larry (Patricia) Powell, Cullman, AL, Doug (Laura) Powell, Cullman, AL, and E.C. (Sandy) Powell, Cedar Lake, and other loving family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Jerry Bieker, and 7 brothers and 2 sisters.

A memorial service for Dorothy Hawkins will be held at 5:00 pm on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the 29th Avenue Baptist Church, 116 East 29th Avenue, Lake Station with Pastor John Hurt, officiating.
