Douglas D. Miller
Age 77 of Hobart passed away Monday, January 26, 2025, at St. Mary Medical Center. He was born on May 6, 1948, to the late Robert Marion and Helen Laverne (nee Tanner) Miller in Gary, Indiana. Douglas Miller will be remembered as a man with a stubborn streak, a giving spirit, and a heart far bigger than he ever let on. He didn’t always take life too seriously, but he took the things that mattered most very seriously, especially his family. Douglas loved his coffee and could enjoy it all day long, usually with a sense of humor close by. Above all else, he loved his wife more than anything in the world. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Those who knew Douglas knew he was generous, loyal, and deeply devoted to people he loved. His presence will be missed but his love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family will ever be forgotten.
He is survived by his daughter, Wendi Shaffer-Hurni; nine grandchildren, Natashia S. (Jon) Dotson, Kyle T. Hurni, Christian E. Hurni, Makyma C. Webb, Hunter L Shaffer, Meya K. Thrasher, Korren L Hurni and Caden J Thrasher, Joshua Petretta; four great grandchildren, Landon M. Klein, Lana June Hurni, Bonnie Rose Hurni and Leo Nathaniel Thrasher; sisters, LaDella Bonczek, Darla Wren, Vicky (Ron) Zernik, and Billi McEwen and other loving family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jane Miller; son, Richard L. Shaffer Jr.; daughter, Dawn M. Keen; siblings, Roberta Sanford, Wayne Miller, Jeannette Bronson, Wilmetta Burroughs, Starling Harrell, Clarence Miller, Sherrine D. Phillips, Cheryle Nosek, Robert Miller and Emery E. Miller.
A celebration of Douglas’s life will be held Friday, February 13, 2026, from 2:00 -7:00 pm with a time of sharing to be held at 3:00 pm and a dinner to follow at Woodland Park Blue Spruce Room, 2100 Willowcreek Rd, Portage, Indiana 46368.
