Dwain Bird

Luther O. "Dwain" Bird, 95, of Portage, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2020. He was born on March 30, 1925 in Carrsville, Kentucky to the late William Dewey and Estelle Bird. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II. On May 2, 1947, he married Helen Wagoner in Morganfield, Kentucky. Dwain retired from US Steel where he worked as a Boilermaker for 30 years. He will always be remembered as a hardworking father who played an active roll in the lives of his family. He cherished the time he spent with his family and loved playing practical jokes on them.

Dwain is survived by his daughter, JoAnn (Riley) Hutsell; son, Roger Bird; grandchildren, Dwayne (Hope) Hutsell, Matthew (Rhonda) Hutsell, Jason Black; 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Bird in 1997; son, Robert Allan Bird; daughter, Deborah Black; grandson, Jeremy Black; and two brothers.

A funeral service for Dwain will take place Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until the time of service. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery. For more information, please call (219) 762-3013.
