Earl Fugate, age 87 of Merrillville, Indiana went to be with the lord Tuesday August 14, 2012. He was born on September 9, 1924 in Talcum, Kentucky to the late Anderson and Peggy Fugate Jr. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Earl retired from U.S. Steel in 1986. He was a Hobart and Merrillville resident since 1952. Earl was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church in Crown Point and he loved taking trips with church friends. He loved to keep busy, was very organized and he often said "everything has its place." Earl found that working with wood was very enjoyable and he also enjoyed math.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes "Jean" Fugate (nee York) of Merrillville, IN; 6 sons, Harold (Debbie) Fugate of Lake Station, IN; Larry (Merry) Fugate of Hobart, IN; Mitchell (Joyce) Fugate of Hobart, IN; Phillip (Cathy) Fugate of Hobart, IN; Mark (Sara) Fugate of WI; Stephen (Janet) Fugate of Merrillville, IN; 1 daughter, Peggy (Kenny Downy) Fugate of SC; 1 sister, Mayo Fugate of Indianapolis, IN; 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by 1 baby daughter, Carol Marie Fugate, and 3 brothers, Amos, Pearl, and David Fugate.
Funeral services are Friday, August 17, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart with Rev. Gary Butler officiating. Burial will follow at McCool Cemetery, Portage.
