Eleanor May Overdeck

May 4, 1938 - January 22, 2025

Eleanor May Overdeck, New Chicago, Indiana, passed away, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 8:33p.m. at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, Indiana.  She was born on May 4, 1938, in Gary, Indiana to John S. and Helen Overdeck.She graduated from Hobart High School in 1955.  She attended Indiana University and received a BS degree and a Masters in Education. She spent most of her teaching career teaching Home Economics in the Ann Arbor public school system until her retirement. Later, she moved back to New Chicago to care for her aging mother and father.   She enjoyed traveling and spent time in Alaska and Europe.  She was very fond of animals.  Her greatest love was her dogs.  They were her pride and joy and her babies.  Over the years she rescued stray dogs and adopted them as pets. She also fed stray cats in the neighborhood.  She found great enjoyment in the arts attending plays, concerts and even ballet classes.  She also enjoyed reading.

She is Survived by her siblings:  Barbara (Overdeck) Walczak, John M. Overdeck, Michael Overdeck and Thomas J. Overdeck; nieces and nephews:  Edward Walczak, Janice Walczak, Kenneth Walczak, John A. Overdeck, Daniel Overdeck, Thomas M. Overdeck, Allison (Overdeck) Collins, Stephen Overdeck and Karen (Threadgill) Overdeck; many great nieces and nephews plus one great, great niece.  She was always very generous to her family and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

A special thanks goes out to Robert Osgood for his devoted help to Eleanor through her later years in life.  She didn't know what she would do without him.  Also, her family is extremely grateful for the brave and dedicated firefighters and policemen who came to rescue her.

A visitation for Eleanor will be held Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home Hobart Chapel, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd., Hobart, Indiana 46342.
