Fred A. Schaefer "Uncle Freddy", age 74, of Lake Station, passed away at home on Saturday, December 9, 2017.  He was born in Gary, Indiana on August 3, 1943 to the late Fred R. and Barbara (nee Kometz) Schaefer.  He took pride in his backyard, pool, geraniums, and the months he spent decorating his house for Christmas, which he enjoyed sharing with everyone.  Fred also had a love for IU Basketball.  He will be remembered as a loving brother, uncle, great uncle, and friend, who became "Uncle Freddy" to everyone he met.

Fred is survived by sister, Barbara (Marshall) Miller; nieces and nephews, Mary (Jim) Rebey, Kari (Chris) Evans, Todd (Tami) Miller, Barbie (Brian) Beanblossom; great nieces and nephews, Emily and Jacob Evans, Zachary, Hannah, Molly Rebey, Carson and Lauren Miller, Gracie and Charlie Beanblossom; dear friends, Joe Stevens, Fran Dickey; and numerous cousins and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made in Fred's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908 or to the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 from 4–8 pm at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd. Hobart, IN 46342 with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 pm, Rev. Nate Edquist officiating.  A Mass of Christian Burial for Fred will take place Tuesday, December 19, 2017, starting with 9:15 am prayers at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel then immediately proceeding to St. Francis Xavier Church, 2447 Putnam St. Lake Station, IN 46405 for 10:00 am Mass with Rev.
