FRED E. SMITH, JR., age 85, of Lake Station, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2013 at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Fred had been Lake Station resident since 1953 and was formerly of Gary. He retired from US Steel in Gary with 34 years of service and was a member United Steelworkers of American. Fred was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and Hobart Elks Lodge #1152. He was an avid White Sox fan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Ann Smith of Lake Station, 4 children: Fred (Dawn) Smith III of Pikesville, TN, Dennis (Ruth) Smith, Deborah (Jim) Pantell and Diane (Tim) Chappo, all of Portage, 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, 2 sisters, Marian (Robert) McDougall of Valparaiso and Patricia (Vernon) Hennings of Boone Grove, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 11:00 am at Rees Funeral Home, 600 W. Old Ridge Rd. Hobart, with Rev. Timothy Engel officiating.
