Obituary

Gabrielle (Gabi) Higgins, age 74, of Gary, Indiana, born on February 14, 1945 in Budapest, Hungary, passed away Friday, August 2, 2019. Gabi was preceded in her death by her parents Joseph Tabory (Hungary) and Gabrielle Papp (Germany), her husband of 46 years, Jimmy Higgins, and 2 sons, James and Jimmy. She is survived by siblings Irene Zimmerman and Oskar Papp, both of Germany, daughter, Michelle (Grant) Jenkins of Gary, In, and son, Michael Higgins, of Missouri City, Tx, grandchildren Brittany, Ashley, Chiina, Ricky, Tabrielle, Tatiana, and Michael, 4 great grandchildren, 3 step grand-children, and many nieces and nephews in Europe and the U.S.  As a very young girl in Hungary, Gabi and her mother escaped Russian gunfire and hostilities several times, eventually residing in Fürstenfeld, Austria. She attended high school in Austria, and after graduation she worked for the Federal Republic of Germany in Cologne. In 1965, she married Jimmy Higgins while he was stationed with the US Army in Cologne, Germany. Later they moved to the US, living in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and eventually residing in Gary, Indiana. Gabi retired from the Lake County Assessor's Office in 1995, was self-taught and fluent in several languages (French, English, and German), enjoyed making perfect scores on online trivia games, and thoroughly understood how electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems worked. Her latest enjoyment was spending time with her Chow dogs (Duchess and Sienna).  Memorial services will be held at St. Mary of the Lake Church, 6060 Miller Avenue, Gary, In, 46403 , on Thursday, August 8, from 10am-11am , with a private family celebration afterwards. The family is being assisted by Rees Funeral Home, Hobart, In. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Mary Hospital in Hobart, In, and the Cancer Center in Munster, In.
