Gerald L. "Pete" Carr, Sr., age 92, of Portage, IN and formerly of Cascade Locks, OR, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, February 10, 2022.

Born on December 28, 1929 in Gary, IN, he was the fourth son of Merle and Nellie (nee Green) Carr.  He was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School, Class of 1947.  On June 9, 1950 he married the love of his life, Shirley Smeltzer and they spent 70 loving years together until her death on May 24, 2021.  Together they raised five children while living in Gary, Crown Point, Elkhart, and Thorntown, Indiana.  Pete and Shirley moved to Cascade Locks, OR and lived there for 35 years.  He returned to his beloved Indiana in July of 2021.

Pete worked very hard until the age of 81, holding various positions in the trucking and towing industry.  He was a man who always had time to help where and when needed.  Pete was actively involved in his church and community wherever he went.  He was a 32 ^nd Degree Mason and was proud to be a Lion.

Pete is survived by his children: Leslie (John) Mitchell, Deborah (Bill) Goatcher, Gerald L. (Pat) Carr, Jr., Cathy (Kevin) Ballard, and Michael (Joy) Carr; 15 grandchildren: Anthony Mitchell, Rachael (Jason) Collins, Jeff (Stephanie) Goatcher, Jason (Melissa) Tellado, Celia Tellado, Stephanie (Bill) Rippel, Steven (Kara) Erwin, Michael (Brittany) Murphy, Kevin Wesley (Christine) Ballard, Danielle (Keith) Moilanen, Samantha (Trevon) Southern, Tanya Reynolds, Jeramiah (Estelle) Carr, Isaac (Barbara) Carr, and Mariah (Tyler) Johnson; 30 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law: Madeline Smeltzer.

Pete is preceded in death by his wife: Shirley (nee Smeltzer) Carr; Parents: Merle and Nellie Carr; brothers: Robert Carr, Lowell Carr, and Donald Carr; daughter-in-law: Judith Carr, grandson: Nicholas Mitchell; and great-granddaughter: Zoe Ballard.

Pete will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife in Cascade Locks, OR.  Arrangements and cremation are entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel.
