Gerald A. Sumner, age 69, a longtime resident of Portage, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2012. He was born on November 22, 1942 in Gary, Indiana the son of Marion and Stella Sumner. Jerry was married to Brenda Olmsted-Brummet on June 18, 1988 in Crown Point. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion – Post 260 in Portage, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers – Local 697, the Knights of Columbus, the Griffith Isaac Walton League, the National Rifle Association, the Portage Historical Society, he was a Webelos Leader in Wheeler, and a volunteer driver for the Veteran's Administration.
Jerry is survived by his family; wife Brenda Sumner, Portage, daughter Sherry Ripley, Valparaiso, sons David Sumner, Lafayette, Scott Sumner, Lafayette, William "Bill" (Lori) Sumner, Chesterton, and Andrew Sumner, Lafayette, 7 grandchildren, sisters Rebecca (Edward) Banashak, Rochester, and Pamela (George) Mandich, Merrillville, brothers Lawrence (Daisy) Sumner, Texas, and Clifford (Suzanne) Sumner, Cedar Lake, and other loving family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Patricia.
A visitation for Gerald Sumner will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Rees Funeral Home – Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage. A Sons of the American Legion Service will be offered at 7:00 on Tuesday followed with a prayer service at 7:15 pm. A morning visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 10:00 am directly at Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Road, Portage on Wednesday, May 2, 2012. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am with Father Andrew Corona, officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Portage.
