Helen M. "Nanny" Cherry (nee Skinta), age 97 of Lake Station passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013. She was born on February 12, 1916 in Gary, Indiana to the late Michael and Mary Skinta. She was a longtime Lake Station resident and a member of St. Michael's Byzantine Parish in Merrillville. Helen enjoyed volunteering at the St Michael's Friday night fish fry.
She is survived by 1 son, George (Jackie) Cherry of Hobart, IN; 1 daughter, Susan (Bill) Rollins of Mesa, AZ; 7 grandchildren, Michelle (Mark) Anderson, Tamara (Mark) Loomis, George (Sue) Cherry, Scott (Sandy) Cherry, Melissa (Micah) McCarty, Liz Rollins, and Matt Rollins, 14 great-grandchildren, Derek (Jeni), Christopher (Cora), Karli, and Neil Anderson, Autumn (Ryan) Dexter, Daniece Loomis, Hillary Cherry, Megan (Bill) Huntsinger, Scott, Ryan, Christian, and Nathan Cherry, Silas and Quinn McCarty, great-great-grandchildren, Larissa, Lucas, Kayleanne, Brady, Franki and Ryder.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Cherry, 1 brother, Edward Skinta, and 1 sister, Marie Frankovich.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Helen's honor may be made to St. Michael's Byzantine Parish.
There will be a funeral mass on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 10 a.m. directly at St. Michael's Byzantine Parish, 557 W. 57th Ave., Merrillville with Father Basil Hutsko officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Portage. Visitation is Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a 6 p.m. Parastas service at Rees Funeral Home, Brady Chapel, 3781 Central Ave., Lake Station.
