Herminia "Miriam" Ortiz

Herminia "Miriam" Ortiz, age 75, of Portage, IN, passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.

Miriam was born on April 28, 1948 in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico to the late Rafaela Sanchez and Santana Vallejo Sanchez. She was a graduate of Gary Edison High School.  Miriam met her husband Ruben Ortiz through church and married two years later on November 18, 1967.  She was a faithful member of Family Christian Center in Munster, IN where she was the administrative assistant for the financial department for 18 years.  She also co-owned Ruben's Restaurant for 37 years.

Miriam is survived by her husband of 56 years: Ruben Ortiz; children: Evelyn (Michael) Ortiz-Davis, Ruben (Maureen) Ortiz II, and Vicky (Matthew) Phillips; brother: Felix (Maria) Vallejo; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Miriam is preceded in death by her parents: Rafaela and Santana and her sister: Maria Esther Alvarez.

Miriam was known for her dedication, loyalty, and unwavering strength through any situation.  She was a sassy, witty, and loving soul who made an impact on everyone's life she encountered.  Miriam will be missed greatly and her memory will live on through her family and friends forever.

Family and friends may gather at Family Christian Center (340 W 45th St., Munster) on Monday, October 2, 2023 from 10:00-11:00 A.M.            A Funeral Service will take place after visitation beginning at 11:00 A.M.  At Rest, Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ortiz Family.
