Howard Gearhart, age 74, of Portage, IN, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. Howard was born on July 24,1947 in Knox, IN to the late Alton and Welma (nee Smith) Gearhart.  He retired from US Steel where he worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic. He proudly served in the United States Army. On November 3,1993 he married, Phyllis A. Henderson and spent 23 wonderful years together until her passing in 2016. Howard graduated from Merrillville High School where he played football, basketball and ran track, he continued to be very active throughout his life.

Howard is survived by two daughters; Rebecca (Brian) Oliver, Kathy (Dennis) Kainrath; two sons; Howard (Kimberly) Gearhart Jr. and Bryon (Megan) Gearhart; eleven grandchildren, Gary (Katilynn) Dube, Danielle Dube, Lauren Carlson and Jared Young, Dennis Kainrath Jr., Abby Kainrath, Kariann (Adam) Cinderich, Kaliegh (Erich) Schroeger, Joella Gearhart, Taylor Gearhart, and Bryon Gearhart Jr.; seven great grandchildren, Emerson Cinderich, Jade Cinderich, Abigail Schroeger, Rory Kainrath, Violet Gunter, Michael Gunter, Wyatt Dube and Emersyn Young; sister, Liz (Joe) Romeo; two nephews, Bret (Annie) Romeo and Ryan (Lauren) Romeo and many other loving family members and friends.

Howard is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Gearhart, his parents Alton and Welma Gearhart and brother, William Gearhart and sister-in-law, Andrea Gearhart.
