Obituary

Howard William Youngheim, age 93, of Portage, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Howard was born on August 27, 1931, in Gary, Indiana, to the late William and Katherine (Schnieder) Youngheim. A proud 1950 graduate of William A. Wirt High School, he went on to serve his country with honor as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Following his military service, Howard enjoyed a career as an IBM operator with the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, from which he eventually retired. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Miller Post and the Portage VFW Post and was also active in the Loyal Order of Moose and the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons. A man of faith, Howard was a devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Howard will be remembered as a kind and caring gentleman, known for his sharp wit, warm heart, and steadfast resilience. He faced life's challenges with strength and determination, always emerging stronger. When he wasn't hard at work providing for his family, he found true joy in spending time with those he loved most—his family and friends.

Above all, Howard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend. His legacy of love, perseverance, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Howard is survived by his four loving children: Karen (Gary) Hutchins of Port Orchard, Washington; Cathy (Kevin Perschke) Fejer of Valparaiso; Paul (Sharon) Youngheim of Portage; and Jeffrey Youngheim of Hollywood, Florida. He was a proud grandfather to Eric (Lindsay) Hutchins, Kimberly (Chance) Garbison, Lauren (Myron) Hase, and Lisa Hamilton, and a cherished great-grandfather to Blaine, Kade, Camden, Graham, Edmund, Gavin, Dominic, and Lindy.

Howard is also survived by his dear friend, Shirley Sanders, and his devoted caregiver, June Sonaty, whose companionship and support meant so much in his later years.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy (LaRussa) Youngheim; his parents; and his sister, Beverly Youngheim.
