HUBERT G. "JERRY" FITZGERALD, age 78, of Portage, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso. Jerry was a Portage resident since 1960 and retired supervisor from US Steel in Gary with 31 years of service. He was instrumental in founding Portage as a City. Jerry was very active in Portage government serving as Building Commissioner for 14 years, Portage School Board for 8 years and Portage City Councilman for 2 years. He was a former member of Portage Jaycees and member of Portage First United Methodist Church.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Beverly, 3 sons, Gerald A. "Jerry" (Nikki) Fitzgerald of Portage, James R. (Carol) Fitzgerald of Eldridge, Iowa and Jeffery D. (Jackie) Fitzgerald of Hobart, 6 grandchildren: Erin (Joe) Hood; Joanna Fitzgerald (fiancé, Stephen Howell); Shandra Herrberg; Rachelle & Robert Fitzgerald and Ashley (Jason) Taylor, great granddaughter, Ramona Herrberg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert & Rhoda (Merrill) Fitzgerald and sister, Carol Ellison.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 22, 2013 at 11:00 am at Rees Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage, with Rev. Dennis Ticen officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Portage.
