Ines R. Nuñez, age 88, of Portage, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015. He was born on January 21, 1927 in Lawn, Texas to the late Lucrecio Nuñez and Maria Razo Nuñez. He was raised in San Jose and Yurecuaro, Michoacan, Mexico. At the age of 15 he left home, making his way to Gary, Indiana where he met, fell in love with and married Guillermina "Mina" Serratto. In 1952, during the Korean War, he joined the US Army Company C 35th infantry regiment "The Cacti" and was quickly advanced to Sergeant. Ines and Mina were married on April 11, 1953, making their home in Lake Station. He was a Golden Gloves Boxer, a member of the Barreiro Serratto VFW Post 7237 and was an active member of Laborer's and Hod Carriers Local 41 for over 50 years, where he specialized and worked primarily on blast furnaces throughout the Southwest, Midwest, Great Lakes Region, as well as Columbia and Venezuela in South America before retiring in 1995.
Ines was a hard worker who loved to dance, cook, play his harmonica and "make it like a party". He loved his family first and foremost. We will miss his wisdom, silly sense of humor and his clever advice. He was Catholic and devoted to La Virgen de Guadalupe and La Virgen de San Juan making yearly pilgrimages.
Ines is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Guillermina "Mina" Nuñez; parents, Lucrecio Nuñez and Maria Razo Nuñez; six brothers, Nicolas, Benancio, Octaviano, Sabas, Juan and Lucas; three sisters, Clemencia, Aurora and Tomasita.
He is survived by five children, Linda (Gilbert) Dominguez, Ninon (Orlando) Gamez, Diana (Pedro) Moreno, Ricardo Nuñez, Joe Nuñez; grandchildren, Gina (David) Bowen, Crystal (Victor) Morales, Leo, Alex and Tomas Dominguez, Orlando Estephan and Isabel Gamez; great grandchildren, Davey and Sean Bowen, Christian Morales; second wife, Maria Garza; brother, Felix Nuñez; sister, Lucia Nuñez; numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends.
Funeral services for Ines will take place, Wednesday, April 22, 2015 beginning with prayers at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart at 10:15 am and then proceeding to Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Road, Portage, for Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Portage. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
