Irving F. Nelson, age 91, of Portage passed away Thursday February 12, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Irving was born July 18, 1923 in Crisman, Indiana to I. F. and Mabel (Smock) Nelson. He was a Carpenter working out of Carpenters Local Union #1485 prior to his retirement. Irving was a founding member of the Portage Lions Club, a member of Dunes Lodge #471, F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend and the Orak Shrine Temple In Michigan City, American Legion Post #260 in Portage and Carpenters Local Union #1485.
He is survived by four sons James (Rhonda) Nelson of Portage, William (Marsha) Nelson of Valparaiso, David (Mary) Nelson of Portage and Thomas (Darlene) Nelson of Westville; two daughters Diane (David) Maynard of Chesterton and Joanne (Larry) Carpenter of Portage; one brother Donald (Kathleen) Nelson of Portage; and many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Irving was preceded in death by his loving wife Bernadine Nelson; his parents; and three brothers Arthur, Dale and Robert.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am Saturday February 14, 2015 at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel 5341 Central Avenue, Portage, Indiana 46368 and end with a 1:00 PM American Legion Memorial Service conducted by American Post #260. Burial will follow at McCool Cemetery.
Memorial gifts are preferred to the Porter County VNA Hospice 2401 Valley Drive Valparaiso, Indiana 46383 in lieu of flowers.
