IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Gordon
Mckinley
June 26, 1931 – September 11, 2021
James Gordon McKinley, age 90 of Portage, Indiana, passed away on September 11, 2021. He was born in Limestone, Pensylvania, on June 26, 1931, to James and Viola McKinley.
James is survived by twin sons Jay (Bari-Tennette) McKinley and Jon (Cindy Finley) McKinley; daughter Michelle (JR) Williams; 5 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Miriam, who passed away this past January; his parents; and all his siblings.
James graduated from the Moody Bible Institute in 1952 and went on to get his bachelor's degree from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, and then his master's degree from Purdue. He then taught for over 30 years in the Lake Ridge Schools Corporation, retiring in 1993. He spent most of that time teaching in the adult education program.
James was raised in the home of a Baptist pastor, the ninth of nine children. He accepted Jesus as his savior at a young age. Throughout his life, he served Jesus in the church by singing and playing the piano, often playing duets with his wife Miriam either at the piano or the organ. They served in the church together for more than 60 years, first at Calvary Baptist Church in Highland and then at Lake Hills Baptist Church in Schererville, Indiana.
James enjoyed music, reading, meeting friends for coffee, gardening, and going to Cubs games. He loved fiercely, gave generously, and served tirelessly. He and his wife made friends wherever they went; restaurants, stores, and coffee shops.
James' family is comforted in knowing he is in the presence of his Savior.
In lieu of a funeral, his family will have a private memorial service.
Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel completed cremation arrangements. (219) 942-2109.
