James D. Stephens Jr., age 86 of Gary passed away Friday, December 28, 2012. He was a longtime Gary resident. James was born on August 31, 1926 in Gary Indiana to the late James (DDS) and Gwendolyn Stephens. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. James was a member of the Gary Kiwanis Club and the Power Squadron. He was a private airplane pilot and loved flying airplanes and boating. He also enjoyed go carts and motorcycles.

He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Helen M. Stephens of Gary, IN; 1 son, Gary D. (Judith) Stephens of St. Charles, IL; 1 daughter, Linda D. (Cleon C.) Stutler of Portage, IN; 5 grandchildren, Shawn, Shannon, and Cortney Stutler, and Stefanie and Allison Stephens.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald, and 2 sisters, Lois and Jerry.

Cremation will take place with Rees Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Portage. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2155 Willowcreek Road, Portage. Navy Honors will follow at 3 p.m.. Call (219) 762-3013.
