Jim Bridges

James “Jim” H. Bridges, age 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 5, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Maurice V. Bridges and Trula (nee Beeler) Bridges. Jim was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family. He was a retired meat cutter and spice salesman and was known for his strong work ethic and dependable nature. On September 8, 1972, he married the love of his life, Sandra “Sandy” L. Hanson, in Merrillville, Indiana. Together, they shared over 53 years of love, memories, and family.

Jim was a member of Dunes Masonic Lodge No. 741 in Portage. He enjoyed bowling and spent more than 25 years participating in various bowling leagues, creating many friendships and memories along the way.

A true craftsman, Jim, had a special talent for building. He was especially known for his amazing deck work. If someone needed a deck built, Jim was the person to call. His skill was remarkable—he could look at a project, determine exactly how many boards were needed, and sketch out the perfect design before ever picking up a tool.

Jim was also a devoted dog lover. His beloved dogs, Kali and Ginger, held a special place in his heart and brought him great joy. He had a generous spirit, a willingness to help others, and a talent for making those around him feel cared for.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Sandy Bridges; two sons, Kenny (Twyla) Krooswyk and Jay (Kim) Bridges; grandchildren, Rob (Ciara) Krooswyk, Nikki (Arthur) Cheung, Michael (Kady) Bridges, and Austin Bridges; great-grandchildren, Jeannie and Chase Krooswyk; siblings, Iva (Coy) Carter, Maurice (Mary) Bridges, Philip (Barbara) Bridges, and Sharon Lilley; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John (Donna) Bridges; and brother-in-law, Toby Lilley.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from 2:00–8:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage, Indiana 46368. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
