Obituary

John A. “Jack” Burger, loving husband, father and grandpa passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026. He was born on April 24, 1948, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Howard and Elizabeth Burger.

Jack proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1968 to 1974. During his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart for his courage and sacrifice. Jack dedicated 37 years to NIPSCO, where he worked as a gas serviceman before retiring in 2003.

On May 24, 1974, Jack married Carla Failla. They shared 52 years of marriage filled with love, family, and cherished memories.

Jack was a man who appreciated the simple pleasures in life. He enjoyed golfing, Lionel trains, and making people laugh. He also held fond memories of growing up in Inland Manor and spending time in Coal City, Indiana. Jack was a member of Hobart Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Carla Burger; his children, Benjamin Burger, Tricia Burger, Aimee (John) Brooks, and Joseph (Lisa) Burger; grandchildren, Ty Vann, Audree Vann, John Brooks, Jr., and Jack Brooks; and siblings-in-law, Pat Powell, Vince Failla, Paula Failla, Bruce (Lori) Failla, Ken (Bayarmaa) Failla, and Scott (Sandy) Failla; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Elizabeth Burger; his father and mother-in-law, Sam and Prudence Failla; his sisters, Lois (Louis) Perunko and Barbara (George) Romer; and his sister-in-law, Patti Scanlon-Failla.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road. A funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Jack will be laid to rest privately at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
