John H. Nelson, Sr., age 67, of Portage, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 16, 1957, in Gary, Indiana. John married the love of his life, Cheryl Bowen, on December 27, 1974. John retired after many years as a dedicated truck driver. He previously sang with The Young World Singers and had a passion for cooking. He enjoyed running his "Johnny Dog" concession truck at various events. In his free time, he loved camping, fishing, riding motorcycles, and attending bike rallies. More than anything, John cherished the time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandpa and great-grandpa, caring brother, and a loyal friend.

John is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Cheryl Nelson; son, Kenny Nelson; daughter, Tammy (Wayne) Holmer; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Merel (Debbie) Nelson and George Nelson; sister, Missy (Gus) Mills; his beloved dog, Freddy; and many other loving family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Laticia Nelson; stepmother, Linda Nelson; and three sons, Billy, John Jr., and Ron Nelson.

Cremation has been entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel. A celebration of life will be held Friday, May 2, 2025 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at Country Side Hall, 5250 US Highway 6 Portage, Indiana 46368.
