John S. "Chops" Ogiego, age 89, of Hobart passed away Sunday, August 5, 2012 at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso. John worked for Slicks Laundry with 20 years of service. He was a WWII Army veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart for his honorable service to his country. John was a member of Assumption B.V.M. Catholic Church, member of the Leon Wolek Memorial American Legion Post #454 and also a member of the PNA Silver Bell Club. John is survived by his wife of 36 years; Sally Ogiego; 1 step-son Robert (Sandra) Galka of TN; 4 step-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lorraine Gospodarek and Eleanor (Russell) Evans both of Hobart; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ogiego of Hobart. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Mary (nee Starek); sisters, Stella Zromkoski, Bernice Sliva and Jean Butlak; brothers, Pete Ogiego, Walter "Lefty", William "Kelly". In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to masses and the VNA Hospice of Porter County. Funeral Services will be held for John on Thursday, August 9, 2012 with 9:30 a.m. prayers at Rees Funeral Home and proceeding to Assumption B.V.M. Church 3530 Illinois Street, Hobart for a 10:00 a.m. mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Lourdu Pasala officiating. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Portage.
