John R. "Jack" O'Hara, age 88 of Lake Station, passed away peacefully Friday, December 18, 2015. He was born on May 11, 1927 in Bicknell, Indiana where he was raised by late Ira O'Hara and Bessie Cecil (nee Davis) O'Hara. Jack started work as a coal miner in Bicknell, Indiana, later moving to Lake Station in 1956 where he worked for U.S. Steel until he retired in 1984.
Jack was a lifelong Cubs fan and said this year was his World Series. He was a U.S. Army veteran (Germany), a baseball player, a longtime bowling league member, a member of the Porter County Horseshoe League and a skilled handyman who helped all who asked, usually for free. Most importantly Jack will be remembered as an exceptionally loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, great uncle, and friend.
Jack is survived by his: one son, Patrick Lee O'Hara of Lake Station; one daughter, Connie Kay O'Hara (Laurence) Siegel of Wilmette, Illinois; four grandchildren, Joshua and Elizabeth, Brian and Britany; two great-grandchildren, Arie and Brysin; and a nephew whom he also loved and raised for many years, Ron Hackler.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Esther O'Hara; father, Ira O'Hara; mother, Bessie Cecil O'Hara (whom all of her children adored); and was the last surviving sibling of 15. His siblings included six sisters, Audra, Betty Jean, Martha, Frances, Vera and Norma; and eight brothers, Reese "Mutt", Ellsworth "Boots", Thomas "Bob", Charlie, Donald, Larry, Bill, and Ira W.
A funeral services for Jack will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart, IN, with Pastor Bob Burton officiating. No flowers please.
