John “Papa John” Ornelas

John “Papa John” Ornelas passed away peacefully on September 26, 2026, at Saint Mary Medical Center. He was born in Gary, Indiana, to the late Pedro and Esperanza (nee Oseguera) Ornelas.

On February 27, 1965, John married the love of his life, Chuyita Zarate, whom he lovingly called his “Consentida.” Together, they shared a lifetime of love, laughter, family, and memories. John was a retired steel mill mechanic who worked for Inland Steel for over 30 years. At just 24 years old, he lost his leg in a work accident, but he never allowed that hardship to define him or stop him from living his life and providing for his family. John was a strong and resilient man who rarely complained, even though he had endured many challenges throughout his life. John had a wonderful sense of humor and was known for being funny, frank, and always true to himself. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams. He had a special love for animals and tropical fish. Above all, John loved his family dearly. His grandchildren lovingly nicknamed him “Papa John,” a name that reflected the special place he held in their hearts. His family will remember him for his strength, humor, honesty, generosity, and the love he gave so freely. John was a member of Assumption BVM Church in Hobart, Indiana.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Chuyita Ornelas; his children, Rosie Ornelas, Pete Ornelas, Johnny (Monica) Ornelas, Giovanni (Jordon Sumlin) Gotti, and; his brother, Joseph Ornelas; his grandchildren, Melissa (Bill) Schweitzer, Linda (Andrew Ashurst) Armstrong, Jazmine Gotti, Efrain Ornelas, Mila Ornelas, and Ava Ornelas; and his great-grandchildren, Jaxx Schweitzer, Sophia Ashurst, Anatalia Ramos, Ezekiel Ramos, and Julian Ramos. He is also survived by many other loving family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

John was preceded in death by his grandson, John Armstrong; his parents, Pedro and Esperanza Ornelas; and his sister, Magdalena Cabrera.

John’s life was one of perseverance, humor, love, and devotion to his family. Though he faced hardships, he continued forward with strength and never lost his ability to make others laugh. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry his love in their hearts forever.

Rest peacefully, Papa John. You will be deeply missed and forever loved.

A Mass of Christian burial will begin directly at Assumption BVM Church, 3530 Illinois Street, Hobart, Indiana 46342 on Friday, October 2, 2026, with Rev. Lourdu Pasala officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville. A visitation for John will be held Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 4:00-8:00 PM with a 5:00 PM prayer service at Rees Funeral Home, 600 west Old Ridge Road, Hobart, Indiana 46342.
