John Vasas, age 84, of Portage, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2013 at Horton VNA Hospice in Valparaiso. John had been a Gary resident most of his life and served in the Army during the Korean War. He retired from US Steel in Gary, Sheet & Tin Mill. John was very active in the Gary American Legion Post #367 where he served as the Commander and Vice Commander.
John is survived by his daughter, Debra (Mark) Ochall, 5 grandchildren: Connie (Craig) Foerg, Mark (Jen) Ochall, Jr., Corey (Sarah) Ochall, Ashley Ochall and John Vasas; great grandchildren: Kyle and Evan Foerg; Aiden and Luke Ochall; Sydney, Reese and Ethan Ochall, and nieces: Linda Sventoff, Margaret Wadman and Patty Marinkovich; nephew, Ricky Vasas.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Judie Vasas, in January of 2013, also son, Donald, brother, Andrew and 2 sisters, Mary Sebo and Margaret Yorko.
